Troposphere (TROH puh sfeer)
First layer. Where weather occurs. Thinnest layer in the atmosphere. 9 - 16 kilometers thick. Contains all most all mass in the entire atmosphere. As altitude increases in this layer, temperature decreases. Conditions in the troposphere are more variable than in other layers. Lowest temp = -60 degrees C.
Stratosphere
Second layer. Contains the ozone layer. Lower stratosphere is colder than the upper stratosphere. Ozone in this layer is usually found in center. The ozone in this layer is helpful, it protects Earth's living organisms from harmful radiation from the sun. 12- 50 kilometers thick. Lowest temp = -60 degrees C.
Mesosphere
Third layer. Begins at 50 kilometer in altitude ends at 80 kilometers. Protect Earth from most meteoroids. "Middle" of the atmosphere. Lowest temp = -90 degrees C.
Thermosphere
Fourth layer. Divided into two layer: ionosphere and exosphere. Outermost layer of the atmosphere. Starts about 80 kilometers above Earth's surface. It has no definite end, but gradually blends into outer space. Though it can be up to 1,800 degrees C. it does not feel very warm. The aurora borealis occurs in lower layer of the thermosphere - the ionosphere. The exosphere, or outer part of the thermosphere, extends for thousands of kilometers.
