Gestation
number of weeks since the first day of the last menstrual period
Abortion
birth that occurs before the end of 20 weeks of getation OR the birth of a fetus/newborn who weighs less than 500 grams
Term
Previously referred to the normal duration of pregnancy, but is no longer recommended to use. See "Early Term" "Full Term" and "Late Term"

Antepartum
time between conception and the onset of true labor; often used to describe the period during which a woman is pregnant, used interchangably with prenatal
Intrapartum
Time from the onset of true labor until the birth of the infant AND the placenta
Postpartum
time from birth until the woman's body returns to an essentially pre-pregnant conditions (some small changes are permanent)
Preterm labor/premature labor
labor that occurs after 20 weeks but before completion of 37 weeks (up through 36 6/7 weeks)
Postterm labor
labor that occurs after 42 weeks gestation
Gravida
Any pregnancy, regardless of duration, including the current pregnancy
Nulligravida
a woman who has never been pregnant
primigravida
a woman pregnant for the first time
multigravida
a woman pregnant for the second or greater # pregnancy
Para
(literally-to give birth) birth after 20 weeks' gestation regardless of the condition of the infant at birth
nullipara
a woman who has never delivered a pregnancy of 20 or more weeks' gestation
primipara
a woman who has delivered one pregnancy at 20 weeks or greater
multipara
a woman who has given birth two or more times at 20 weeks or greater
stillbirth
an infant born dead after 20 weeks gestation (no signs of life-pulse, breathing, or movement)
