RATIONAL NUMBER
Any number that can be written as a fraction. WHOLE NUMBERS- The numbers
REAL NUMBERS
The type of number we normally use, such as 1, 15.82, -0.1, 3/4, etc. Positive or negative, large or small, whole numbers or decimal numbers are all Real Numbers
NEGATIVE INTEGER
Less than zero. A negative number is written with a minus sign in front Example:
POSITIVE INTEGER-
Greater than zero.
ABSOLUTE VALUE
ow far a number is from zero. Example "6" is 6 away from zero, but "-6" is also 6 away from zero. So the absolute value of 6 is 6, and the absolute value of -6 is also 6. The symbol "|" is placed either side to mean "Absolute Value", so we write: |-6| = 6
Sum |
HE RESULT OR ANSWER TO AN ADDITION PROBLEMDIFFERENCE- THE RESULT OR ANSWER TO A SUBTRACTION PROBLEMPRODUCT- THE RESULT OR ANSWER TO A MULTIPLICATION PROBLEMQUOTIENT- THE RESULT OR ANSWER TO A DIVISION PROBLEMPLUS- A SYMBOL USED FOR POSITIVE INTEGERSMINUS- A SYMBOL USED FOR NEGATIVE INTEGERSZERO- IT HAS NO SIGN. The whole number between -1 and 1, with the symbol 0 Shows that there is no amount
EXPRESSIONS
Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something. Example: 2×3 is an expression
OPERATIONS-
A mathematical process. The most common are add, subtract, multiply and divide
OPERATORS
An Operator is a symbol (such as +, -, ×, etc)
EVALUATE-
TO CALCULATE THE VALUE OF. SOLVE
EQUATION
An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign "=" like this: 7 + 2 = 10 - 1 OR 3X + 5 = 11
VARIABLES
A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable.
CONSTANTS-
A fixed value. In Algebra, a constant is a number on its own,
EXPONENTS
The exponent of a number says how many times to use that number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. In this example: 8^2 = 8 × 8 = 64 (The exponent "2" says to use the 8 two times in a multiplication.) ANOTHER NAME FOR EXPONENT IS POWER.
BASE- The number that is going to be raised to a power. Example: in 8^2, 8 is the base |
VINCULUM-
The horizontal line used to separate the numerator and denominator in a fraction.
It can also be any horizontal line placed over an expression to show that everything below the line is one group. |
