Christopher Columbus
b.1451 Spanish Royalty Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand paid for voyage to contact India. Columbus wanted honor and riches for himself. Royalty wanted to spread Catholicism and Spain wanted to beat Portugal to Asian traders.
Reasons for Columbus' Voyage
1. Columbus wanted honor and fortune, to convert people to Catholicism.
2. Isabella and Ferdinand wanted to spread Catholicism, to find a sea trade route for trade with Asia (spices/herbs)
3.To gain a Spanish advantage over Portugese traders to Asia
Columbian Exchange
Transatlantic trade launched by Columbus' voyages. America brought cocoa and potatoes to Europe. Europe shipped wheat and domesticated animals, firearms, and other technologies, as well as culture to the natives
Treaty of Tordesillas
1494, after urging by Pope Alexander, signed by Spain and Portugal. Divided all lands on Earth not already claimed by other Christians along the "Line of Demarcation" Spain ruled to the West including most of the Americas and Portugal would control the rest. Evidence today in language and culture, for instance much of S. America speaks Spanish except for portions of Brazil which speak Portuguese.

Searched for fountain of youth, explored and named Florida in 1513.
Vaco Nunex de Balboa
Sough opportunity in the Americas, landed on Isthmus of Panama. 1513 led a group of Spaniards and Native Americans across the Isthmus. First known Europeans to see Pacific from America.
Ferdinand Magellan
Portuguese, set sail from Spain in 1519 sailed to Brazil through the strait of Magellan, crossed the Pacific, spotted Guam. He was later killed in a fight but some of his crew went on to be the first known people to circumnavigate the globe.

Spanish conquerors of the Americas. Quested for "God, gold, and glory."
