MONOCOQUE?

a type of construction (as of a fuselage) in which the outer skin carries all or a major part of the stresses.

Single shell Skin

STRESSED SKIN

provides most of the strength, as well as covering.

Spars

SPARS

spanwise members, either wood or metal carrying most of the load.

Wing construction

STABILIZER

Fixed horizontal surface which produces up or down force to keep the aircraft level.

ELEVATOR

Mobile horizontal surface controlled by the pilot to change the amount of up or down force.

Empennage

FIN

Fixed vertical surface which keeps the aircraft straight.

RUDDER

Movable vertical surface controlled by the pilot to control the turn.

STABILATOR

Combined stabilizer and elevator.

CORROSION

Oxidation.

Inter-crystalline.

Dissimilar metals.

Fretting.

STRESS & STRAIN

Stress = is the force or load acting on a member.

Strain = is the distortion or yield of a body due to stress.

TYPES OF STRESSES

Compression - crushing, wings

Tension - stretching, bracing wires

Torsion - twisting, landing gears

Shearing - cutting

Bending - aircraft spars or beams (long member bending due to load)

LOAD AND LOAD FACTORS

Dead load - the actual weight of the aircraft.

Live load - additional load imposed by acceleration, due to turns and pull outs.

FLAPS

High lift devices attached to the trailing edge of the wings. Used to increase lift at slower speeds and adds drag.

Wings

PROPULSION SYSTEM

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

Hydraulic system are used where large force must be exerted, such as for operating flaps or undercarriage.

Used a liquid applying pressure on a surface to do the work.

On small aircraft, brakes are usually the only hydraulics.

BRAKES SYSTEM

UNDERCARRIAGE

SHOCK ABSORBERS

VENTILATION & HEATING SYSTEM

AIRCRAFT LOGBOOKS

TYPES OF ENGINES

CLASSIFIED OF PISTON ENGINES

Piston engines are classified by cylinder arrangement

Horizontally opposed, inline, radial.

FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS

Pito static instruments

Airspeed, altimeter vertical speed indicators.

Gyro

Attitude, heading indicator and turn coordinator.
