mastitis
Inflammation of the mammary gland or breast.

A tumour arising from the melanocytic system of the skin and other organs. When used alone the term refers to malignant melanoma.
meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges. When it affects the dura mater, the disease is termed pachymeningitis, when the arachnoid and pia mater are involved, it is called leptomeningitis or meningitis proper.

"1. <cell biology, oncology> The transfer of disease from one organ or part to another not directly connected with it. It may be due either to the transfer of pathogenic microorganisms (for example, tubercle bacilli) or to transfer of cells, as in malignant tumours. The capacity to metastasize is a characteristic of all malignant tumours.

An abnormally small head of a newborn, a congenitally small brain.
mucolytic
Destroying or dissolving mucin, an agent that so acts: a mucopolysaccharide or glycoprotein, the chief constituent of mucus.

Pain in a muscle or muscles.
myasthenia
Muscular debility, any constitutional anomaly of muscle.
mycosis
Any disease caused by a fungus.
myelitis
An infection of the bone marrow.

An inflammation or infection of the spinal cord.
myeloid
Collective term for the nonlymphocyte groups of white blood cells. It includes cells from the granulocyte, monocyte and platelet lineages.
myocarditis
Inflammation of the myocardium, inflammation of the muscular walls of the heart.
myopathy
Any disease of a muscle.
myopia
That error of refraction in which rays of light entering the eye parallel to the optic axis are brought to a focus in front of the retina, as a result of the eyeball being too long from front to back (axial myopia) or of an increased strength in refractive power of the media of the eye (index myopia).

Also called nearsightedness, because the near point is less distant than it is in emmetropia with an equal amplitude of accommodation.
narcolepsy
A disorder of sleep associated with excessive daytime sleepiness, involuntary daytime sleep episodes, disturbed nocturnal sleep and cataplexy.
neonatology
The art and science of caring medically for the newborn.
nephro-
Having to do with the kidney.
nephritis
Inflammation of the kidney, a focal or diffuse proliferative or destructive process which may involve the glomerulus, tubule or interstitial renal tissue.
neuralgia
Paroxysmal pain which extends along the course of one or more nerves.
neuritis
"Inflammation of a nerve, a condition attended by pain and tenderness over the nerves, anaesthesia and paraesthesias, paralysis, wasting and disappearance of the reflexes. In practice, the term is also used to denote noninflammatory lesions of the peripheral nervous system.

If the involvement is in one nerve it is called mononeuritis, in several nerves, mononeuritis multiplex, if diffuse and bilateral, polyneuritis. "

A functional nervous affection or disease, that is, a disease of the nerves without any appreciable change of nerve structure.
nocturia
The excessive urination at night.
oliguria
Secretion of a diminished amount of urine in relation to the fluid intake.
oophorectomy
The removal of an ovary or ovaries.
osteo-
A combining form from the Greek word for a bone.
osteoarthritis
Noninflammatory degenerative joint disease occurring chiefly in older persons, characterised by degeneration of the articular cartilage, hypertrophy of bone at the margins and changes in the synovial membrane. It is accompanied by pain and stiffness, particularly after prolonged activity.
osteomalacia
A condition marked by softening of the bones (due to impaired mineralisation, with excess accumulation of osteoid), with pain, tenderness, muscular weakness, anorexia and loss of weight, resulting from deficiency of vitamin D and calcium.
osteomyelitis
Inflammation of bone caused by a pyogenic organism. It may remain localised or may spread through the bone to involve the marrow, cortex, cancellous tissue and periosteum.
osteoporosis
A reduction in the amount of bone mass, leading to fractures after minimal trauma.
otitis
Inflammation of the ear, which may be marked by pain, fever, abnormalities of hearing, hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo.
otomycosis
An infection due to a fungus in the external auditory canal, usually unilateral, with scaling, itching, and pain as the primary symptoms.
otosclerosis
A pathological condition of the bony labyrinth of the ear, in which there is formation of spongy bone (otospongiosis), especially in front of and posterior to the footplate of the stapes, it may cause bony ankylosis of the stapes, resulting in conductive hearing loss. Cochlear otosclerosis may also develop, resulting in sensorineural hearing loss.

Toxicity to the auditory nerve (cranial nerve VIII).

The passage of a large volume of urine in a given period, a characteristic of diabetes.

Inflammation of the rectum.
prodrug
A compound that is converted within the body into its active form that has medical effects. Prodrugs useful when the active drug may be too toxic to administer ter systemically, the active drug is absorbed poorly by the digestive tract, or the body breaks down the active drug before it reaches its target.
pruritis
Itching. Pruritis can result from drug reaction, food allergy, kidney or liver disease, cancers, parasites, aging or dry skin, contact skin reaction, such as poison ivy, and for unknown reasons.
ptosis
"1. <anatomy> The prolapse of an organ or part.

2. <clinical sign> The drooping of the upper eyelid from paralysis of the third nerve or from loss of sympathetic innervation. "
pyrexia
A fever or a febrile condition, abnormal elevation of the body temperature.
pyrogen
Substance or agent that produces fever. The major endogenous pyrogen in mammals is probably interleukin-1.
rhinitis
Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose.
rhinorrhea
Medical term for a runny nose
sarcoma
A form of cancer that arises in the supportive tissues such as bone, cartilage, fat or muscle.
sclerosis
A induration or hardening, especially hardening of a part from inflammation and in diseases of the interstitial substance. The term is used chiefly for such a hardening of the nervous system due to hyperplasia of the connective tissue or to designate hardening of the blood vessels.
sepsis
The presence of organisms in the blood.
splenitis
Inflammation of the spleen.
stasis
A word termination indicating the maintenance of (or maintaining) a constant level, preventing increase or multiplication.
stenosis
Narrowing or stricture of a duct or canal.
stomatitis
Inflammation of the oral mucosa, due to local or systemic factors which may involve the buccal and labial mucosa, palate, tongue, floor of the mouth and the gingivae.
sublingual
Located beneath the tongue.

1. Cursory; not thorough.
2. Pertaining to or situated near the surface.
syncope
A temporary suspension of consciousness due to generalised cerebral ischaemia, a faint or swoon.
tachycardia
The excessive rapidity in the action of the heart, the term is usually applied to a heart rate above 100 per minute and may be qualified as atrial, junctional (nodal) or ventricular and as paroxysmal.
thrombosis
The formation, development or presence of a thrombus.
thrombolytic
Dissolving or splitting up a thrombus.
thrombophlebitis
Inflammation of a vein associated with thrombus formation.
thrombus
An aggregation of blood factors, primarily platelets and fibrin with entrapment of cellular elements, frequently causing vascular obstruction at the point of its formation. Some authorities thus differentiate thrombus formation from simple coagulation or clot formation.
toxemia
Pregnancy-induced hypertension, a dangerous condition that may occur during pregnancy. Symptoms may include elevated maternal blood pressure, swelling of ankles and hands, sudden weight gain and protein in the urine.
transdermal
Entering through the dermis or skin, as in administration of a drug applied to the skin in ointment or patch form.
trituration
1. The act of reducing a drug to a fine powder and incorporating it thoroughly with sugar of milk by rubbing the two together in a mortar.

Synonym: tripsis.

2. Mixing of dental amalgam in a mortar and pestle or with a mechanical device
uremia
A toxic condition resulting from kidney disease in which there is retention in the bloodstream of waste products normally excreted in the urine.
urolithiasis
Presence of calculi in the urinary system.
urticaria
A transient condition of the skin, usually caused by an allergic reaction, characterised by pale or reddened irregular, elevated patches and severe itching, hives.
viremia
The existence of viruses or viral particles in the bloodstream.
xerostomia
A dryness of the mouth from salivary gland dysfunction, often seen in patients with Sjogren syndrome.
