Upper Airway Antomy

Including the Nose and nasal cavities, pharynx and larynx. The upper airway functions to filter warm and humidify the air.

Gag Reflex?
|
The posterior pharynx has a rich supply of senstitive nerves. If you trigger them this is called a gag reflex. It prevents aspirtation

Tonsils
|
Lympathitic tissue responsible for filtering bacteria and other foreign materials especially from the mouth and nose. Two sets of tonsils are located on ech side of the throat. The palatine tonsils re larger and more prominent. The andenoids are the smaller ones that can get inflammed and cause ear infection during childhood.

Laryngopharynx
|
Sometimes clled the hypopharnx functions in respirations and digestion and extends from the epiglottis to the glottis.

Eppiglottis
|
A leaflike structure composed of cartilage that serves as the gatekeeper into the larynx.

Valecula
|
THe depression pocket between the base of the tongue and the epiglottis.

Sellick Maneuever
|
posterior compression of the cricoid cartilage occludes the esophagus reducing the risk of aspiration.

Cricothyroid membrane
|
Located between the thyroid and cricoid cartilage and is a fibrous membrane.
