What is MRSA and what are the precautions?
Methicillian resistant staphylococcus aureus
- transmitted by direct and rarely indirect contact
- ARO special contact precautions
When do we screen for MRSA?
- All admits to CCCU, PICU, NICU, 8A/B, 6E/A (+newborns need repeat at 7 days or earlier if d/c or t/f)
- All patients with >24hr overnight stay in any other health care facility in past year (also need VRE screening - rectal/stool)
- All patients resided out of Canada in past year (and VRE screen)
- All previously MRSA+ patients (NEED PRECAUTIONS)
- Any patient directed by IPAC (NEED PPRECAUTIONS
When do we screen for VRE (vancomycin resistant enterococcus)?
- Children <1 yr born outside of Canada or transferred from VRE affected facility
- ARO-V Contact Precautions
MRSA screening consists of?
Nasal swab of both nares
Rectal swab (or perianal if neutropenic)
Swab of any non-intact skin (i.e. rash, indwelling tube/catheter site, incision, umbilical stump)
What does ARO Specical Contact Precautions consist of?
Gown
Gloves
Mask
Dedicated patient care equipment (temp. NP. O2 probes, stethoscope, diaper scale, etc)
Visitors don't require PPE if not visiting other patients; review hand hygiene
Possible visitor restrictions to common patient areas
How do we discontinue ARO Special Contact Precautions?
3 consecutive sets of negative cultures 1 week apart, off antimicrobial therapy at least 48 hrs
