Government's Role

Make decisions and enforce laws, maintain order and normalcy

Government's purpose

Lead, protect, and provide services for citizens

Ex. Citizenship & Immigration, National Defence, postal service

Federal Government

Deals with issues that affect whole nation

Ex. Education, Healthcare

Provincial Government

Deals with issues that affect the people within just one province

Ex. Garbage, libraries, parks, road maintebcr, bylaws

Municipal Government

Deals with issues that affect people within a local area, such as a city or region

Elected

To choose someone for a leadership position through a voting process

Appointed

To choose someone for leadership position w/o voting for them

Representitive

An elected official who acts on behalf of the voters

Ex. Hunger Games- Panem, most colonies in America

Oligarchy

Political power is held by very small, rich & powerful group. Freedom is restricted an the small group enjoys more privileges than the people who they rule

Ex. France b4 revolution, Saudi Arabia now

Absolute Monarchy

The nation is run by a monarchy (king or queen), who has authority in making decisions.

Ex. Britian, Canada, Denmark

Constitutional Monarchy

The nation has a King or Queen as head of state, but their power is defined an restricted by a constitution. Usually, the real power is held by elected representatives of voters

Ex. China, North Korea

Dictatorship

One person or ruling group has complete control of all political decisions.



They may use military force to control the population and political opposition. Generally individual rights are restricted. Media is strictly controlled

Ex. Canada, Japan, Germany, South Korea

Democracy

Citizens have constitutional rights, may run for public office, have the right to participate in fair and free elections.



Representative- citizens elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf


Direct- citizens vote directly yes/no about different issues

Ex. Recognition as sovereign groups, nation to nation negotiation, right to self gov., elected council, control over traditional lands

Indigenous Self-Government

Diff for each group, but generally groups want ability to make decisions for themselves in their lands

Ex. Person u choose May not be who you thought they were or do what you thought they would

Democracy and quality of life

Having a democracy helps to achieve but DOES NOT guarantee that all population will have better quality of life
