Brachioradialis
Superficial layer
Origin: proximal 2/3 of supraepicondylar ridge of humerus
Insertion: lateral surface of distal end of radius proximal to styloid process
Innervation: radial nerve
Function: relatively weak flexion of forearm. maximal when forearm is in mid pronated postition
Extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL)
Superficial Layer
Origin: lateral supraepicondylar ridge of humerus
Insertion: dorsal aspect of base of 2nd metacarpal
Innervation: radial nerve
Function: extend and abduct hand at wrist. active during clenching
Extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB)
Superficial Layer
Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus
Insertion: Dorsal aspect of base of 3rd metacarpal
Innervation: deep branch of radial nerve
Function: extend and abduct hand at the wrist joint, active during clenching
Extensor digitorum
Superficial Layer
Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus
Insertion: extensor expansions of medial four digits
Innervation: deep branch of radial nerve
Function: extend medial 4 digits primarily oat mcp joints, secondarily at interphalan joints
Extensor digiti minimi (EDM)
Superficial layer
Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus
Insertion: extensor expansion of 5th digit
Innervation: deep branch of radial nerve
Function: extends 5th digit primarily at mcp joint, secondarily at interphalan joint
Extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU)
Superficial layer
Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus. posterior border of ulna via aponeurosis
Insertion: dorsal aspect of base of 5th metacarpal
Innervation: deep branch of radial nerve
Function: extends and adducts hand at wrist joint
Supinator
Deep Layer
Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus, radial collateral and anular ligaments, supinator fossa, crest of ulna
Insertion: lateral, posterior, and anterior surfaces of proximal third of radius
Innervation: deep branch of radial nerve
Function: supinates forearm, roates radius to turn palm anteriorly or superiorly
Extensor indicis
Deep layer
Origin: posterior surface of distal third of ulna and interosseous membrane
Insertion: extensor expansion of 2nd digit
Innervation: posterior interosseous nerve, continuation of deep branch of radial nerve
Function: extends 2nd digit, helps extend hand at wrist
Abductor pollicis longus (APL)
Outcropping of Deep layer
Origin: post surf of proximal 1/2s of ulna, radius, and interosseous membrane
Insertion: base of 1st metacarpal
Innervation: post interos nerve, deep branch of radial
Function: abducts thumb and extends it at carpometacarpal joint
Extensor pollicis longus (EPL)
Outcropping of Deep layer
Origin: post surf of middle 1/3 of ulna and interos mem
Insertion: dorsal aspect of base of distal phalanx of thumb
Innervation: post interos nerve, cont of deep radial
Function: Extends distal phalanx of thumb at interphalan joint, extends metacarpophalan and carpometacarp joints
Extensor pollicis brevis (EPB)
Outcropping of Deep Layer
Origin: Post surf of distal 1/3 of radius and interos mem
Insertion: dorsal aspect of base of proximal phalanx of thumb
Innervation: post interos nerv, cont of deep radial
Function: extends proximal phalanx of thumb at metacarpophalan joint, extends carpometacarp joint
