Population

A group of organisms of the same species that live in the same area. For example, a desert will have populations of different species of lizards and cactus plants.

Population Dynamics

The study of the changes in the number of individuals in a population and the factors that affect those changes.

Carrying Capacity

The largest size that a population can reach in an ecosystem.

Population Size

The number of individuals in a population at a given time.

Population Density

A measure of the number of organisms that live in a given area. The population density of a city may be given as the number of people living in a square kilometer.

Range

The large geographic area where a population lives.

Competitor

A species that is often compared to an opportunist species. How does it compare? Its life span is longer. It has fewer offspring.

Immigration

In population studies, the movement of an organism into a range. The range is inhabited by individuals of the same species.

Emigration

In population studies, the movement of individuals out of an ecosystem.

Limiting Factor

A factor or condition that stops the continuing growth of a population in an ecosystem.

Oppertunist

A species that is often compared to a competitor species. How does it compare? Its life span is shorter. It has large numbers of offspring.

Extinction

The disappearance of a species with no chance of its coming back.

Habitat

The natural environment in which a living thing gets all that it needs to live. A desert is a habitat. A coral reef and a freshwater lake are, too.

Pollution

The giving off or the presence of harmful substances into the air, land, or water.

Absolute Age

The age in years of an event or object. This is the true age.

Fossil

A trace or the remains of a once-living thing from long ago.

Mass Extinction

One of several periods in Earth’s history when large numbers of species became extinct. They became extinct at nearly the same time.

Multicellular

Made up of multiple cells.

Relative Age

The age of an event or object as compared to other events or objects.

Unicellular

Made up of a single cell.
