Esters

A family of organic compounds formed by the reaction of alcohol with carboxylic acid in the presence of H2SO4. Characterised by a strong and pleasant smell.

Esterification

The reaction that occurs when an ester is formed.

A simple molecule that can be polymerised.

Addition polymers

A polymer that is formed by an addition reaction.

Poly (ethane) is formed from ethane

Biopolymers

Natural polymers such as starch and proteins.

Condensation polymers

A polymer formed by a condensation reaction (one in which water is given out)

Nylon is formed by the condensation reaction between 1,6 diaminohexane and hexanedioic acid.

Cross linking

The formation of side covalent bonds which increase the rigidity of the material, say, a plastic.
