What is a polymer?

A polymer is made from a monomer that is an alkene. The double bond opens to join up with new monomers to make a long chain molecule called a polymer.

Why is it important to recycle polymers?

They are made from crude oil which is non renewable

What are biodegradable plastics?

Plastics that break down easily. Corn starch is built into the plastics. Microorganisms feed on the corn starch which breaks the plastic down.

Name and describe 3 smart polymers

Light sensitive polymers: Top layer of plaster peeled back. Lower layer nw exposed to light. Adhesive loses stickiness. Peels easily off the skin.

Hydrogels: Have cross linking chains that trap water. Act as wound dressings. Led body heal. Good for burns.

Shape memory: Wound is stitched loosely. Temp of the body makes the thread tighten. Closes the wound up.
