Describe the process of polymerisation

monomers are passed at high tempreture over a catalyst. the double bond opens up and forms a polymer chain made of the monomers

what uses do we have for polymers?

polymer: Typical use

Polythene: Plastic bags and bottles

Polypropene: Crates and ropes

Polychloroethene: water wipees and isulation on electricty cables.

Why is it important?

they are made from crude oil which is non renewable.

what are biodegradeable plastics?

plastics that break down easily. corn stratch are built into the plastic. microorganisims in soil feed on corn scratch. this breaks the plastic down.

name and describe 3 smart polymers:

light sensitive plsters: top layer of plasater pleeled back. lower layer now exposed to light. adhesive loses stickness peels easily off the skin.

Hydrogels: have cross linking chains that trap water. act as wound dressings. let body heal. good for burns.

Shape memory: wound is stiched. temp of body makes the thread tighented. closes the wound up.
