What is a government? |
Formal vehicle through which policies are made and affairs of state are conducted. |

Government that gives power to the people. Indirect: U.S. uses elected representatives. Direct: Ancient Rome and Greece. Everyone has a say. |

A doctrine that society should be governed by certain ethical principles that are part of nature and, as such, can be understood by reason. |

A few rule in their own interests. Wealth, social status, military rank, and achievement dictates who participates in government. Russia and china. |

Everyone gets an equal say regardless of intelligence, experience, and credentials. |

Define politics |
Process of resolving conflicts over how society should use its scarce resources and who should get those benefits. This is done through voting. |

1. Resolves conflicts - who gets what when, where, and why. Done through trial and with taxes. 2. Provides public services - library's, schools, roads, pd, hospitals 3. Defends nation/culture - military |

Commonly shared attitudes, beliefs, and core values about how government should operate. |

What is popular consent? |
Principle that governments must draw their powers from the consent of the governed. |

What is popular sovereignty? |
The notion that the ultimate authority in society rests with the people. |

What is a republic? |
A representative or indirect democracy. |

What is a social conservative? |
One who believes that the government should support and further traditional moral teachings. |

What is a statist? |
One who believes in extensive government control of personal and economic liberties. |

What is a totalitarianism? |
Power resides in a leader who rules according to self interests without regard for individual rights and liberties. |
