Medieval

AKA the Middle Ages. Period from 500-1500 in Western Europe

Feudalism

Medieval form of government in which lords give land to loyal vassals in return for military service

Impact of the Roman Catholic Church during Medieval times

The clergy influenced schools, lords, and general life. Music, art, literature all revolved around religion.

Manorialism (Manor System)

A type of traditional economic system in Medieval Europe. Lords protect serfs, and serfs serve the lords.

Manor

The area a lords rules over. It includes the land, serfs, manor house, animals, etc. Manors were self sufficient.

Medieval Society

Social classes were strict and based on birth. Peasants were the lowest class and the king was the highest.

Nobles

Lords belong to this class. They own land, have power, have vassals, and are typically wealthy.

Serfs

Peasants, servants, merchants, and artisans that are tied to a manor and can't leave. No land, no wealth, no power.

Byzantine Empire

Eastern half of Rome that didn't fall in 476. It was centered out of Constantinople in Turkey. Spoke Greek and location makes it prosperous from trade.

Architecture (Hagia Sophia), Art (mosaics), law (Justinian's Code), strong central government, Orthodox Christianity, weaponry (Greek fire)

Justinian Code

Law code in the Byzantine Empire compiled during Emperor Justinian's time. Based on Roman laws and judgments (Twelve Tables).

Orthodox Christianity

Branch of Christianity founded in Eastern Europe. Similar to the Catholic Church except in language, traditions during service, and leadership.

Advancements in math and science in a civilization.

Muslim Achievements

Algebra, banking, trade, trigonometry, literature, medicine, libraries that held Greco-Roman info.

Impact of the Mongols on Russia

Missed the Renaissance due to lack of cultural diffusion with Western Europe.

Mongol Empire Building Techniques

Psychological warfare, horseback riding, fighting skills allow them to conquer. Tolerance, bureaucracy, and adapting to regions allows their empire to flourish.

Chinese Dynasty: Confucian ideals put in place - civil service exams and efficient bureaucracy, farming improvements, improved silk production, roads, canals.

Muhammad died and Islam spread via trade routes and military conquests out of Arabia to North Africa, Spain, and the Middle East.

Muslim travelor/explorer. Diaries give us information about the Muslim world.

Genghis Khan united the Mongol tribes in central Asia. The Mongols used their horseriding and archery skills as well as psychological warfare to conquer most of Asia.
