History

Predates literacy. Used to be sung and more structured. Used to remember laws, geneology, prayers, history and stories (epic poetry). Was found on monoliths, runestones, and stelae. Now less formal (free verse and prose poetry)

Oldest poem

Tail of shipwrecked sailor written in Hieratic (4500 B.C.E.). Other sources say epic of Gilgamesh written in cuneiform. Shipwrecked probably predates by half a millenium. After those Greek epics ex: Iliad and Odyssey
