Onomatopoeia

The use of words which resemble the sounds they describe.

End-stopped

A line or stanza in a poem that has a full-stop at the end of it

Enjambment

Lines in a poem that are not end-stopped and are continued into the next line

Stanza

A group of lines, in a poem, displayed on the page by blank lines above and below (a paragraph basically)

Imagery

The use of descriptive language to create a particular picture, feeling or mood in the reader's imagination

Caesura

A pause in the middle, or near the middle, of a line of poetry caused by punctuation

Assonance

The repeated use of the same vowel, or vowels, in two or more words that are close to each other

A term or phrase given to something to which it is not actually applicable, in order to suggest resemblance

Anaphora

The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of lines that follow each other in a poem

Sibilance

The repetition of sounds that makes a sss or shhh sound
