Solo e pensoso i piu deserti campi

Alone and pensive, the most deserted fields

Vo mesurando a passi tardi e lenti

I pace with steps lagging and slow,

E gli occhi porto per fuggire intenti

And I hold my eyes watchfully, so as to flee

Ove vestigio uman l'arena stampi.

Wherever human traces mark the sand.

Altro schermo non trovo che mi scampi

I find no other screen to protect me

Dal manifesto accorger de le genti

From people's manifest awareness [of my state],

Perche negli atti d'allegrezza spenti

for in my acts extinct of joy

Di fuor si legge com'io dentro avampi:

They can read from without how inwardly I blaze:

Si ch;io mi credo omai che monti e piagge

So that I now believe mountains and shores

E fiumi e selve sappian di che tempre

And rivers and forests know of what temper

Sia la mia vita, ch'e celata altrui.

My life is hidden from others

Ma pur si aspre vie ne si selvagge

And yet pathways so rough or wild

Cercar non so, ch'Amor non venga sempre

I know not how to see where love would not always come

Ragionando con meco, ed io con lui
