Denial, anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance
Denial Stage and Nurse response.
Refuses to believe that the loss is happening and not ready to deal with it.
Nurse response to the denial stage.
Verbally support client but do not reinforce the denial/examine your own behavior to ensure you do not share in the pt denial
Anger Stage
Directs anger to nurse or about a situation
Nurses response to Anger Stage
1. Help client understand that anger is a normal response to loss 2. avoid withdrawal or retaliation/dont take personally.3 Deal with clients needs. 4. Allow pt as much control over their lives as possible. 5. Provide structure and continuity to promote security
Bargaining stage
Pt promises to change a behavior to avoid loss and express feelings of guilt and fear.
Nursing response to Bargaining stage
Listen attentively and encourage client to talk to releive guilt and irrational fear. If appropriate offer spiritual support.
Depression Stage
The client grieves over what happens and what cannot be
Nurses response to depression stage
Allow pt to express sadness. Communicate nonverbally by sitting without conversation. Convey caring by touch.
Acceptance stage
Pt comes to terms with loss and have decreased interest in physical surroundings and support people
Nurses response to acceptance stage of Grief
Help family and friends understand clients decreases need to socialize. Encourage client to participate as much as possible in the treatment program.
