ENTERPRISE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Company culture and existing systems that the project has to deal with or can make use of... "company baggage" which is outside the control of the team.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (PMIS)

includes automated tools (scheduling software), a configuration management system, shared workspaces for file storage or distribution, work authorization software, time tracking software, and procurement management software, plus repositories for historical information.

ORGANIZATIONAL PROCESS ASSETS

Existing processes, procedures, and historical information. Inputs to the majority of process in all the project management process groups. Provide direction and guidance in planning.

-Processes, procedures and policies (best practices)

-Corporate knowledge base (historical info)

-Historical information (record of past projects)

-Lessons Learned (what the work packages were, how much each package cost, what risks were uncovered)

CONSTRAINTS

Time, cost, risk, scope, quality, resources, customer satisfaction, and any other factors that limit options

*Use constraints to help evaluate competing demands.

A temporary endeavor with a beginning and an end

Creates a unique product, service or result

MATRIX (ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE)

Weak: Power rests with the functional manager (power of the project manager is = to expeditor or coordinator)

Balanced: Powre is shared between functional and project manager.

PROJECT EXPEDITOR

FUNCTIONAL (ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE)

Common form of organization. Grouped by areas of specialization within different functional areas (e.g. accounting, marketing, manufacturing)

PM's work in a silo = Projects occur within a single dept.

PROJECTIZED

Entire organization is organized by projects, and the project manager has control over the project. Personnel report to PM, but when the project is over, the PM has NO HOME

PROJECT BASED ORGANIZATION

Create temporary frameworks around their projects that allow them to circumvent any obstacles inherent in their existing organizational structure (whether functional, projectized, or matrix) Ensures project completion while minimizing impact

ORGANIZATIONAL HIERARCHY

Operation

Middle Management

Strategic

*Hierarchy influences factors like PM's authority level, resources and team members.

PROJECT LIFECYCLE

Predictive - Plan drive project (Waterfall) - require scope, schedule, and cost to be determined early in the life of the project

Incremental

Iterative
