Process

A set of interrelated actions and activities performed to create a pre-specified produt, service, or result. Each process is characterized by its inputs, the tools and techniques that can be applied, and the resulting outputs.

Process Inputs

PMs need to take into account organizational process assets and enterprise environmental factors, even if they are not listed as iputs for the process specification.

Project Process Major Category - PROJECT Mgt Processes

Project Management Processes

Ensure effective flow of the project through the life cycle. Encompass the tools and techniques involved in applying the skills and capabilities described in knowledge areas.

Project Process Major Category - PRODUCT Oriented Processes

Product-oriented processes

These processes specify and create the project's product. For example, various construction techniques and tools need to be considered when building a house. This is out of scope for PMBOK but should be considered in PM

Which Processes to Use

Carefully access each process and decide which to use; This is called tailoring.

Process Groups v. Phases

The process groups are NOT phases. All process groups could be conducted in a single phase.

Initiating Process Group

Processes to define a new project or a new phase of a project.

Define Scope

Budget

Stakeholders

Assign PM

Authorize Project

Initiating Process Group - Purpose

To align stakeholders' expectations with the project's purpose, give them visibility of scope and objectives, show how their participation can ensure success.

In large projects, you may need to perform initiation processes in each phase.

Initiation Process and Project Boundaries

Initiation processes may be performed at the org, program, or portfolio level and in those cases would be outside the project's level of control.
