EXPOSITION
the process by which background information is given; a "stable" situation is introduced relationship of causality among the events
RISING ACTION
once the CONFLICT is established, this continues to build up tension within the story until the moment of crisis
CLIMAX
this is the central moment of crisis; a turning point in the story where the character decides to do something to resolve the conflict
FALLING ACTION
everything that happens after the climax; it is the lessening of tension as the conflict is resolved
DENOUEMENT/RESOLUTION
this is brought about from the FALLING ACTION; this is the release of tension built from the onset of the conflict, establishing another "stable" situation. This can be closed with all loose ends tied or open and not so clear
