PLATE BOUNDARIES
* place where 2 lithospheric plates meet
* area where geologic activity occurs (qaukes, volcanoes, mountain building)
DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES
* AKA - Spreading Centers
* where 2 plates move away from each other
* new crust is formed (productive site)
* most found on ocean floor @ MOR
* ex: Pangaea, Rift Valley in Africa
CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES
* where 2 plates collide
* 3 types based on types of plates involved (see those)
OCEANIC - CONTINENTAL CONVERGENT BOUNDARY
* AKA: O-C Boundary
* oceanic plate collides with continental plate
* oceanic plate subducts under continental plate - it's more dense
* causes major quakes & explosive volcanoes
* produces ocean trenches
* ex: Andes Mountains (S. America)
OCEANIC - OCEANIC CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
* AKA: O-O Boundary
* oceanic plate collides with oceanic plate
* older plate subducts under younger plate - it's more dense
* causes quakes and volcanoes
* ex: Islands of Japan
CONTINENTAL - CONTINENTAL CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
* AKA: C-C Boundary
* continental plate collides with continental plate
* neither is subducted - similar densities
* rocks crumple - fold - create mountains
* ex: Himalayas
TRANSFORM BOUNDARIES
* 2 plates slide past each other
* plates get "hung up" - build stress & pressure -->
* rocks break --> plates lurch = earthquake
ex: San Andreas Fault - California
OCEAN RIDGE SYSTEM
* series of mountain ranges under the oceans
* Mid-Atlantic Ridge is most famous
