Vegetative Propagation
This is using part of an old plant to make a new one, without human help.
Seaweed
This is a type of algae.
It is many celled.
Three main groups are brown, red, and green algae.
Algae
This is found mostly in water. it can also grow in damp places, on soil, rocks and on other living things. This has NO vascular tissue.
Important source of food for many water creatures.
Water Plants
These are plants made to live in water.
Artificial Propagation
This is growing a new plant from an old one with the help of humans.
Taking a cutting is an example of the process.
Rhizome
These thick underground stems grow sideways making new roots and buds that grow new shoots.
Examples include irises, ferns, and many types of grasses.
Tubers
These are swollen underground stems.
They grow from an underground shoot and store food.
In winter, the plant dies and these grow into a new plant the following year. These are similar to a bulb, but the bulb is self-contained alive plant, where this is just storing food.
Runner (as it relates to a plant)
A new plant develops when a long shoot from the parent plant touches the ground, develops roots and grows into a new plant.
Examples include spider plants and strawberry plants.
Bulbs
These special ball-like underground stems contain a plant that stays alive all winter, while the rest of the above-ground plant dies. It also contains food for the plant.
