What is photosynthesis?

The production of carbohyadrates in plants from raw materials using energy from light.

Why do plants need food?

For energy

For growth of cells and tissues

Give the function of chlorophyll.

Trap light energy and convert it to chemical energy.

Word equation of photosynthesis.

Carbon dioxide + water in the presence of light and chlorophyll = glucose + oxygen

Define hypothesis

An attempt to explain an observation.

Chemical equation of photosynthesis.

6CO2 + 6H2O= C6H12O6 + 6O2

Why is a control needed in an experiment?

Avoid several variables from being altered.

Why are plants green?

Chlorophyll

Describe what happens during photosynthesis.

Water is absorbed by the roots and carbon dioxide enters the plant through stoma. Light is trapped by the chlorophyll. This light splits water molecules to oxygen and hydrogen molecules. Oxygen diffuses out of the leaves and hydrogen is combined with CO2 to produce a sugar.

How is cellulose made in plants?

Sugar molecules form a long chain and are added to cell walls.

How are proteins made in plant cells?

Nitrogen is added to sugar to form amino acids. Make enzymes and cytoplasm .

Why are phosphorus and magnesium needed?

Magnesium is needed for chlorophyll and phosphorus for DNA and energy release.

How plants use photosynthetic products?

Respiration

Storage

Synthesis of other substances

What are trace elements?

Elements in very small quantities needed by the plant.

Define gaseous exchange.

The taking in and out of gases

Describe the eperdermis

Single layer of cells on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf. There is a thin waxy layer called cuticle.

Explain the gaseous exchange in plants.

Stomata opens up to let in carbon dioxide.
