Adrenal cortex manufactures/makes
corticosteroids and a small amount of sex hormones
Corticosteroids are composed of
glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids
Sex hormones are composed of
androgens and estrogens
Gonadotropins are
follicle stimulating hormone and luteinzing hormone, they influence the gonads
Prolactin
stimulates milk production after childbirth
Human chorionic gonadotropin
is taken from human placentas and contains FSH and LH
Menotropins
is a puried form of FSH and LH, taken from the urine of the postmenopausal women.
Menotropins are given too
produce ovulation in women with ovulatory failure, stimulate production of sperm, and assist when testes havent fallen into scrotum.
Clomiphene
synthetic nonsteroid, used to promote ovulation
Somatotropin/ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE ACTH
comes from human pituitary glands removed at autopsy, REGULATES GROWTH DURING CHILDHOOD AND IS GIVEN TO CHILDREN WHO HAVE FAILED TO GROW.
Adrenocorticotropic hormone uses
stimulates adrenal cortex to produce/secrete hormones GLUCOCORTICOIDS, and is used in diagnostic testing and treatment of neurologic problems.
Menotropins adverse reactions
produce ovarian enlargement, blood inside peritoneal cavity, and febrile reactions
Clomiphene adverse reactions
abdominal discomfort, ovarian enlargement, blurred vision, nervousness, hot flashes
Chorionic gonadotropin adverse reactions
headache, irritability, restlessness, fatigue
Posterior Pituitary hormones
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)/VASOPESSIN and oxytocin
Vasopressin
regulates the reabsorption of water by the kidneys, given when body loses water DIABETES INSIPIDUS, used in replacement therapy, and STIMULATES ADRENAL CORTEX TO SECRETE CORTISOL, CORTICOSTERONE, ALDOSTERONE
Vasopressin adverse reactions
abdominal cramps, anaphyxlasis, pallor, diarrhea, flatus, headaches, sweating, tremors, urticaria, uterine cramps, spinning, vomiting
Vasopressin drug interactions
oral antidiabetics, urea, and fludrocortisone increase effects of vasopressin. large does of epinephrine, heparin, and alcohol decrease the effect.
Forms of pituitary hormones
NO ORAL FORMS, IM SUBCUT IV
What should be monitored when taking antidiuretic hormone?
specific urine gravity and watch for water intoxication or signs of dehydration
Adrenocortical Hormones
hydrocortisone, cortisone, mineralcorticoids- aldosterone and desoxycorticosterone
Hyrdocortisone and cortisone
regulate glucose, fat, and protein metabolism and control antiinflammatory response and immune response
Aldosterone and desoxycorticosterone
conserve sodium and increase elimination of potassium
Glucocorticoid uses
replacement of missing hormones in adrenal insufficiency ADDISONS DISEASE, reduce antiinflammatory, allergic, or immunologic responses.
Local Steroids uses
intraarticular- joints, soft tissue, intrabursal- bursae, and lesions
Corticosteroid drug interactions
increase the effects of barbiturates, sedatives, narcotics, and anticoagulants.
Prednisone
the drug of choice to reduce inflammation and depress the immune system
Steroid withdrawal syndrome
stopping steroids suddenly, symptoms- anorexia, nausea, and vomiting, lathargy, headache, fever, joint pain, myalgia, skin peeling
Corneal fungal infections
are likely to develop with extensive ophthalmologic corticosteroid use
Signs/symptoms of adrenal insufficiency
malaise, weakness, hypotension, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, aching bones, headache, fever, and diarrhea
Diet when on steroids
high in potassium and low in sodium
