What is a motor unit?
Single motoneuron and the muscle fibers it innervates
What is a small motoneuron?
Motoneuron that innervates only a few muscle fibers
What is a large motoneuron?
Motoneuron that innervates many muscle fibers
What is a motoneuron pool?
Collection of motoneurons that innervate the muscvle fibers of the same muscle
How is muscle contraction increased?
By recruitment of additional motor units
What is the size principle?
As motor units are recruited, more motor neurons become involved, which generate more tension.
What type of muscle sensors are there and what do they detect?
1. Muscle spindles: detect changes in muscle length(dynamic and static)
2. Golgi tendon organs: detect muscle tension
3. Pacinian corpuscles: detect vibration
4. Free nerve endings: detect noxious stimuli
What type of muscle fibers are there?
Extrafusal and intrafusal
What type generates the force for contraction?
Extrafusal fibers
What are the innervations for extrafusal fibers and intrafusal fibers?
Extra- alpha motoneurons
Intra- gamma motoneurons
How are intrafusal fibers arranged in relation to extrafusal?
They run in parallel, but not for the entire length of the muscle
