6 Cards in this Set

  • Back
  • 3rd side (hint)

A-bands

Dark regions within the sarcomere where thick filaments (H Band) are located

MR: remain constant size

MC: remain constant size but H Zone become narrower or disappear entirely

Muscle relax (MR); Muscle contract (MC)

I-bands

Light regions within sarcomere where only thin filaments are present

MR: I-bands appear wider as the thin filaments are not overlapping with thick

MC: I-bands become narrower as thin filaments are pulled towards the center of sarcomere

M-line

Structure in the center of sarcomere that helps to anchor thick filaments in place

MR: M-line remains intact does not undergo significant change

MC: M-line remains intact does not undergo significant change

Z-disc

Structures at the ends of sarcomere that anchor thin filaments

MR: Z-discs maintain their position and do not move significantly

MC: Z-discs moves closer togetheras thin filaments are pulled inward (shortening of sarcomere)

H Zone

A region within the A-band where only thick filaments are present

MR: H Zone appears wider

MC: H Zone becomes narrower or disappear completely

Sliding filament mechanism

During contraction the process of thick and thin filaments interacting and sliding past each other

Myosin heads of thick filaments bind to actin of thin filaments

Myosin undergo a series of conformational changes pulling sarcomere to m-line
