What are the stomach's 3 main fxns?
1. Storage: allows emptying into small intestine at a rate appropriate for optimal digestion/absorption
2. Secretes HCl: starts protein digestion
3. Mixing: mixes food with gastric secretions to make chyme
What are the stomach's volumes?
Full-50cc
Empty-1500cc
-Facilitated by rugae
-Receptive releaxation allows an increase in volume w/o increase in pressure
-Reflex relaxation triggered by eating via Vagus
What do pacesetter cells do?
-Generate slow wave potentials (3/min) that move towards the pyloric sphincter
-Thick mm. have strong waves and thin mm. have weak waves
How does mixing occur?
Via retropulsion
-Wave of chyme hits closed pyloric sphincter and splashes back into stomach
Factors which affect the rate of gastric emptying...
1. Amt of chyme in stomach (major): proportional to the amt of chyme in stomach
2. Stomach distension via: direct stretch effect, involvement of intrinsic plexuses/vagus n., gastrin
3. Chyme fluidity: more fluid chyme empties faster
