What is made in the adrenal medulla?
Catecholamines: epinephrine and norepinephrine
What is a simplified way to think about the medulla?
An enormous sympathetic ganglion where the postganglionic neurons have lost their axons and just become huge secretory cells. -- CHROMAFFIN CELLS
What is the catecholamine synthesis pathway?
Tyrosine --> Phenylalanine --> Dopamine --> Norepinephrine --> Epinephrine
What are the different catecholamine receptors?
Alpha Receptors – NE > E > Isoproterenol
- Beta-1 Receptors – Isoproterenol >> E ~ NE
- Beta-2 Receptors – Isoproterenol >> E > NE

aka ALPHA receptors are more sensitive to Norepinephrine
BETA-1 don't prefer either
BETA-2 prefer Epinephrine
What is Pheochromocytoma?
Chromaffin cell tumor, is rare fatal HTN. Use alpha and beta blockers.

Unopposed alpha receptor action will kill you.
