What are speed and velocity both measured in? |
m/s (or km/h or mph) |
What is the difference between speed and velocity? |
Speed Is just how fast you are going (e.g. 30mph) with no regard to direction, velocity however must also have the direction specified (e.g. 30mph north) |
What is the formula connecting speed, distance and time? |
Average speed = distance moved / time taken |
Example of formula. Question - A cat skulks 20m in 35s, Find a) its average speed, b) how long it takes to skulk 75m |
a) s=d/t = 20/35 = 0.57m/s (2d.p) b) t=d/s = 75/0.57 = 131s =2min 11s |
What is acceleration? |
Acceleration Is how quickly the velocity is changing Is NOT the same as velocity or speed |
How can the velocity change? |
The change in velocity can be a change in speed AND/OR a change in direction |
What is the formula linking acceleration, time and velocity? |
Acceleration = change in velocity / time taken A = (v-u) / t |
What is the (v-u) in the acceleration formula? |
v = the final velocity u = the initial velocity |
What is the unit of acceleration? |
m/s² |
Example of acceleration formula Question - a skulking cat accelerates from 2m/s to 6m/s in 5.6s a) find its acceleration |
a) a = (v-u) / t a = (6-2) / 5.6 a = 4 /5.6 a = 0.71m/s² |
