What is the density of a fluid?
Equation???
The density is Mass per volume

p = M/V
What is Pressure?
Equation???
P=F/A

A force exerted over a given Area
What constitutes a fluid?
Gases and liquids. Anything that can flow into a space and take on the shape of its container
What happens to pressure when you increase the Force exerted?
The pressure increases
What happens to pressure when a given force is applied to a larger area?
The pressure decreases
What are the units of pressure?
N/m^2
Pascals
What is the atmospheric pressure in Pa?
In Psi?
1.01 x 10^5 Pa
14.7 psi
Do pressure in fluids act equally in all directions?
Yes. The pressure in a fluid acts equally in all directions, and acts at right angles to any surface.
What is gauge pressure?
How do you calculate it?
The gauge pressure measures atmospheric pressure at zero and accounts for any additional pressure within a system.
Pg = P - Pat
What causes the pressure to increase as a submarine dives and how much does it go up for a given increase in depth?
The increases pressure is due to the added weight of water pressing on the submarine as it goes deeper. The downward force exerted on the top is by the atmosphere and the farther you go down the more weight contributes to the pressure.
P= Pat +pgh
How do you describe pressure variation due to depth?
P= Pat +pgh (start at the top)

P2 = P1 + pgh (start in middle)
What is 1 atm according to a barometer?
1 atm = 760mmHg
In a U-shaped tube, why are two arms equal in level if it is the same liquid throughout?
If the density is the same throughout, and there is no external pressure on one side, atmospheric pressure will equalize the system to the same levels.
What is pascals Principle?
An external pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted unchanged to every point within the fluid.
