What is physics?
the study of interactions between matter and energy.
Name four characteristics of physics.
1. Developed out of a curiosity to explain our environment.
2. Deals with motion/behaviors related to molecular particles smaller than an atom (very microscopic) to objects as large as planets, stars, and galaxies.
3. Often predicts how nature and natural phenomena will behave.
4. Mechanics, thermodynamics, cryogenics, plasma physics, solid-state physics, etc.
5. Math- you have to be a wizard in math. following & including units.
Motion
a change in position of something using a reference point.
Speed
a rate of change in position or a "rate of motion."
What is rate?
something that changes over time.
What are examples of rate?
heart rate, pulse, growth rate.
Name the three types of speed and their definitions.
1. Instantaneous speed- rate of motion at any given instant.
2. Constant speed- a speed that does not vary or change.
3. Average speed- for objects that don't travel at a constant speed. (Total distance/total time.)
What is the equation for average speed?
Average speed=total distance/total time. OR s=d/t
Annie can run 100 meters in 20 seconds. What is Annie's average speed?
5m/s
