What is the relationship between charge, density and current?
λ=(iv)/(c*c)
c=3.0*10^8 |
What is the equation for magnetic force?
F=qvB
B must be in Tesla |
What is the magnetic force between parallel currents? Between opposite currents?
Parallel currents attract while opposite currents repel
What is the notation picturing a field into the paper?
xxxxxx
What is the notation picturing a field coming out of the paper?
.......
What is the relationship between Gauss and Tesla?
10,000 Gauss= 1 Tesla
What is the point of Helmholtz coils? What happens to electrons that are shot into the region between them?
There is a uniform magnetic field throughout the cylinder, therefore the electrons move in circle.
What is the radius formula?
r=(mv)/(qB)
What is the formula for KE?
KE=.5mv^2
How does a synchrotron work?
There is an electric field that speeds up the particles. Therefore there is an increase in the magnetic field.
Why are superconducting magnets used in recent accelerators?
you get more Tesla
How does a bubble chamber record events? What information can be determined from the tracks?
Bubble chambers shoot particles into liquid hydrogen, ionize the particles they pass by and therefore the hydrogen boils along the ionized path. This shows us the momentum, sign of charge (positive or negative), mass and decay of the particles.
What is the first right hand rule?
1. Point your right thumb in the direction of the positive current.
2. Fingers curl in the direction of the B field |
What is the second right hand rule?
1. Point your fingers in the direction of positive particle velocity.
2. Curl fingers in the direction of the magnetic field 3. Thumbs point in the direction of the force on the particles |
Derive the formula for radius based on Fmag=Fucm.
Fmag=Fucm
qvB=m(v^2/r) r= (mv)/(qB) |
