What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Remember that it is different from weight because mass does NOT depend on the force of gravity!
All matter has it.
What is weight?
Weight is a measure of the pull of gravity on an object. It is like mass, but dependent on the force of gravity. While the mass of an object is always the same, the weight is not.
think of your weight on Earth and your weight on the moon....is it the same? what about your mass?
What is volume?
Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up. It can be measured in several ways. How would you measure a solid? Think about length, width and height. How would you measure a liquid? How about a graduated cylinder, which has measurement on the outside.
When you are measuring the amount of space an object takes up, consider the state of the matter: liquid, solid or gas. Then decide how to measure it!
What is density?
Density is the concentration of matter in an object. It is the amount of matter in a certain volume. The formula is Density = mass divided by volume.
Now, think about it: that means that Mass = Density x volume, and volume = mass divided by Density. So if you have any 2 measurements, you can figure out the other one. Pretty cool, huh?
What is solubility?
Solubility is the ability of a substance to be dissolved in another substance.
Sugar is soluble in water (it dissolves in water) but black pepper is not.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a combination of two or more different kinds of matter, each of which keeps its own physical properties.
If you mix up sugar and cinnamon, you can still see the sugar and the cinnamon, right? They keep their individual physical properties.
What is a solution?
A solution is a type of mixture in which particles of two solutions are evenly mixed. Solutions cannot be easily separated.
Solutions do not have to be liquids! Some mixtures of metals are solutions of solids: brass is a solution of zinc and copper. It is made by melting the two metals together. Gases also form solutions. Air is a solution of what gases? Hydrogen and oxygen!
