galvanotaxis and its value
electrocurrent attracts WBC;s to area because if there is an electrical charge applied to an area of tiss. injury this will attract cells b/c they also have a charge. Value= destroy dead tissue that promotes bacteria growth. helpts fight infection. fibroblasts make collagen and elastin so scar/healing therefore less entry for bacteria.
-activated neutrophils are attracted to the negative electrode as well as lymphocytes, platelets, mast cells (which release histamine and initiate inflammatory process by degranulation). and fibroblasts
why does changing electrical potential of injured area with e-stim enhance healing?
b/c when there is damage to cell membranes, activity of the sodium potassium pump is disturbed so the membranes become more positive hence wound areas usually have a more positive charge. e-stim can alter this changing it back to mroe negative (wihich is what it's resting membrance potential is at) thereby accelerating wound healing.
