Clause

A group of words that contains a subject and a predicate.

Simple sentence

A sentence that contains only one clause.

First person

The speaker.

Second person

The person being spoken to.

Third person

The person being spoken about.

Phrase

A group of words. A term normally used for words that go naturally together e.g. the other day.

Verb

An action, state of being or occurrence.

Main verb

An ordinary verb. A doing verb.

Auxiliary verb

A verb that combines with a main verb to form different tenses.

Noun

Labels a thing or idea.

Pronoun

Substitute for a noun phrase or a noun.

Adjective

A describing word that provides further information about a noun.

Determiners

Points more precisely to the person, thing or idea to which reference is being made.

Adverb

Gives information about the way that an action is performed or when and where it takes place.

Preposition

Gives information about position or movement. When used in front of a noun, the two together do the work of an adverb.

Conjuction

Joins two or more nouns or clauses to each other.

Direct object

A noun phrase that is the recipient of the action of a transitive verb.

Indirect object

The person for or to whom something is done.

Transitive verb

A verb with an object.

Intransitive verb

A verb without an object.

Ditransitive verb

A verb with both a direct and indirect object.

Sentence

Contains one or more words that are grammatically linked.

Grammar

Describes the rules of how sentences are constructed.

Predicate

Part of a clause that contains a verb and states something about the subject.
