autotroph

an organism that uses the sun to make it's own food

photosynthesis

a process used by autotrophs in order to make the food for themselves

heterotroph

organisms that rely on other organisms to make energy for them.

example: Animals

light reactions

Light energy from the sun turned into a chemical energy. temporarily stored as ATP.

chloroplast

an organelle found in plants and aglae that sucks up light and turns it into energy

thylakoid

a membrane found in the chloroplasts that contains the components for photosynthesis

granum

a stack of thylakoids

stroma

one of many openings in a leaf or stem of a plant that enable gas exchange to occur

pigment

a substance that gives another substance or a mixing color

chlorophyll

the green pigment within the chloroplasts

carotenoid

an orange pigment within the chloroplasts that only is visible during the fall season

photosystem

a cluster of chlorophyll and other pigments that harness light energy in the chloroplasts

primary electron acceptor

an acceptor of electrons last from chlorophyll a; found in the thylakoid membrane

chemiosmosis

in chloroplasts and mitochondria, a process in which the movement of protons down their concentration gradient across a membrane is coupled to the synthesis of ATP

electron transport chain

a series for molecules found in the mitochondria and chloroplasts, through which electrons pass in a process that causes protons to build up on one side of the membrane

Calvin Cycle

a biochemical pathway of photosynthesis where carbon dioxide is converted into glucose using ATP

carbon fixation

the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide, such as in photosynthesis

stomata

the liquid around the thylakoids
