Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the chemical process where plants use sunlight energy to produce their own food.

How food is made in green plants

Plants use light to combine carbon dioxide with water ( raw materials) to make glucose a simple carbohydrate.

Chlorophyll in the leaf is uses to effect the reaction and oxygen gas is given off as by product. Plants convert light energy into chemical energy which is stored in the food

Conditions for photosynthesis

Chlorophyll

Light energy

Carbon dioxide

Water

Role of chlorophyll

To absorb light energy and convert it to chemical energy causing carbon dioxide to combine with hydrogen

Role of light

To split water into its components hydrogen and oxygen.

Storage of the products of photosynthesis

It is used in the cell during respiration

Taken to different parts of the plant to be stored for further use (translocation)

Epidermis

Two layers of cells closely fitted at the top and bottom of the leaves

The upper epidermis has a waxy layer (cuticle) on its outside

Lower epidermis has more stomata than the upper

Guard cells

Are crecent shaped, surround each stoma and controls the opening and closing of the stomata
