Give examples of how environmental justice differs from mainstream environmentalism
Env Justice focuses on community of human and nonhuman (mainstream focuses on the separation of human and nonhuman)

E.J. encompasses all gender and race whereas E.M main participation has been white and lead by males

E.J. focuses on where people "live and play," including urban and city enviroments because a large part of our environment is where we live. E.M focuses only on those places that are "wild" which is basically nonhuman environments

E.J. values the city as a part of enviroment. E.M demonizes it.

E.J. includes endangered as humans and nonhuman were EM focuses only on nonhuman
Ecopsychology
method of understanding how different groups views of nature and its influence on identity
view of Carl Anthony in relation to Env. justice
He believes that ppl of color have suffered alienation as a result of mainstream env. ideas of wilderness and also being the targets of env. degradation.

He gives examples of physical alienation of native americans which were pushed off of their land in order to create a "pristine" environment.

He also cites psychological damage on inner city youth because of the comparison of the idyllic american landscape as beautiful and the mainstream idea that their community is "trash" because it is urban.

He says that alienation must be transformed in order to address environmental issues.
how does the env. justice movement define environment?
the place we work, live, and play
What are the differences between env. justice and main. env on the "victims" of env. problems
Env. justice movement maintains that ppl are victims of env. issues like pollution. It has actually been documented that ppl of color and poorer communities have been targets of pollution and env. degradation.

Env. mainstream only values nonhumans as the victims of env. problems
what was achieved at the first national people of color environmental leadership sumit
ppl of all colors came together to create a community and understanding of each other's difficulties and being targeted by env. degradation.

they created the 17 principles of env. justice
Connect the ideas of Stephen Feld and env. justice
He believe that ppl should be included in end. species as well. He says it would lead to more effective environmentalism
Connect the ideas of Whitt and Slack and env. justice
They argue that communities should included human and nonhuman. That people are inseparable from their environment.
What is the connection that merchant makes to pollution and economic class
pollution is connected with poverty
Why does merchant in explaining the global ecological crisis focus on identifying env. problems with land, air, and water?
Because she wishes to explain that the actions of our economy affect natural processes

"human production systesms put increasing stress on nonhuman nature through the biogeochemical cycles and envergy exchanges that unify all ecological processes."
What does radical ecology mean?
radical means root

so merchants book focuses on what is the root problem of the env.
What does merchant pose to be the first contradition of the global ecological crisis?
the impact of human production on nonhuman nature
what does merchant pose as the 2nd contradiction to the global ecological crisis
the impact of human reproduction on economic production, which in turn will impact the env.
What is the current population growth trend according to merchant?
the overall growth rate is slowing and the time for the total pop to double is increasing (meaning it will take longer)

# of children per family is decreasing
Relate the ideas of Malthus and population to the global ecological crisis described by merchant
Malthus belive that population tends to increase geometrically while food supply increases arithmatically. Therefore he believes that there is a carrying capacity to the world's population, a point where no more life can be sustained.

Malthus believes that env. checks of disease, famine, etc, and rational checks, like education, contraception, etc. keep the rates of population growth in check.
Relate the ideas of Paul and Ann Ehrlich and population with the global ecological crisis
they believe that the crisis is connected to population; however, they believe that the population explosion will eventually come to an end.
What are the 5 factors that the Ehrlichs believe will lead to reduced fertility
adequate nutrition, proper sanitation, basic health care, education for women, and equal rights for women.
Relate the ideas of Joel Cohen and the global ecological crisis
He believes that an increased population will lead to more cultural values coming into contact through migration which will lead to more friction and conflict
Political economy
the joining of politics and economy
Relate political economy, the global ecological crisis, and population (as well as the ideas of david harvey)
Harvey argues that population, resources, and ideas of population control are related to a societies economic mode of production
Relate ideas of Harvey, captialism, and population
Capitalism requires a balance between labor and the demand of goods.

In labor increases, then wages fall, then workers do not have enough money to buy goods, leading to a fall in capitalism
What does capitalism rely on
A constant demand for goods
What was the Malthusian approach to population and capitalism
to stimulate the upper class to create fresh motives for industry
what is harvey's approach to population and capitalisms
He believes in a surplus population that creates a reserve of labor that will replace the workforce that leaves their jobs or fill jobs as economy expands
how does bary commoner see the population problem
he sees it as being related to standards of living.

the better the quality of life, the lower the birth rate

"the root of the world population crisis is poverty, then to end it we must abolish poverty"
globalization
the breakdown of trade barriers and the abolition of tarrifs in order to promote free trade among nations
what is a goal of globalized economy
maximize profits with the least amount of cost
what does merchant argue about globalization and the global ecological crisis in relation to 1st and 3rd world countries. what is her proposed solution?
It has caused 3rd world to be dependent upon 1st world. It has also allowed 1st world to rape the env. of 3rd world.

solution: to stop mania for growth and focus on fulfilling basic needs of all
who coined the idea of natural capitalism
paul hawken and amory lovins
What is the basis of natural capitalism
It is basically the same idea of capitalism based on increased demand for goods, but it must include environmental services
who coined the idea of steady state economics
herman daly
what is the idea of steady economics
creating a low, or no growth economy and work towards meeting the basic needs of all
What are the 5 ways for the loss of biodiversity
overharvest
invasive species
habitat destruction
islandization
pollution
what worldview is the progressive conservation movement based upon?
late frontier, that the forest has instrumental value
