1st. example of irony S uses? Irony of indirection..what is it??
He starts by saying the way he was described by his users, was not him at all. He became quite interested in the person they were describing. He wanders who they were talking about. This is a way of saying by indirection the picture of S given is fiction.
2nd. example of irony S uses? Irony of reversal..what is it??
(the corruption S is accused of is corruption of youth) he says this was actually his greatest service. It amounted to inspiring the youth to question.
3rd. example of irony S uses? Irony of defiance of expectation..what is it??
One would expect a man found guilty of a capital offense would be scared. But S says he should be treated as a hero, as a retired gladiator.
Although S claims to "know nothing" in the Apology he makes many claims to knowledge. What are some claims?
He knows nothing is more important in life than care of ones soul. To identify wealth w/happiness is a mistake. Care of ones soul is most important. He knows noone knowingly and willing corrupts his friends. No harm befalls a good person, greater evil to inflict injust than to suffer it.
Noone knowingly and willing corrupts their friends, S says in the Apology. What reason does he give for this?
He gives argument that if he corrupts his friends then he is teaching them evil and making them evil. He will eventually become victim of their evil. Who would bring evil upon themself?
Death should not be feared says S. What case does he make?
If you fear death then that presupposes that you know what it is, noone has that knowledge, therefore noone should fear it. He knows this statement to be true and also to be false.
What reasons does socrates give that the soul is the most important thing about us?
It is possible that the soul is immortal, his body will die but it is possible his soul will continue. The soul is also the qualities that define us.
How do we cultivate the exellences of the Soul? (virtues)
The four virtues. Piety, Justice, self discipline and courage. The soul is to be cared for if we are to be truly happy, we do this through reflecting on what these are.
"The unexamined life is not worth living." Why does S believe this?
Nothing is more important than our soul. If you dont examine your life then its just as good as if you never lived. Nothing more important than reflecting asking questions and seeing how soul can be open.
"Now we to part, you live I to die." he says at the end of the trial, in what senses is this ironic?
its ironic because he said in the beginning that death was not to be feared, and death is good. And its like he is not sure if death is good or not. He is not consisten with his argument he made in the begining of the trial.
