Virtue
quality that makes it's possessor good and the work that the possessor does good.
Moral Virtue
habit of choosing what the "middle" is for us in actions and emotions as determined by the right reason. Includes: selflessness, love, prudence, temperance and generousity.
Natural Moral Law
not man-made, universal law that applies only to humans. This can be broken but not changed. Deals with both public and private actions.
Civil Law
man-made law that applies only to humans in certain areas, and can be both broken and changed. Deal with public actions only.
Cultural Relativists
argues conventional things are not ethical principles. Believe civilization is not something absolute, but relative to circumstances.
Temperance
practice of abstaining from sense pleasures. Most necessary.
Courage
habit of facing dangers at the right time, in the right place and for the right reasons. Acquired by facing what is painful.
Foolhardiness
excessive vice of courage. facing dangers when it is not the right time or for the wrong reasons.
Cowardice
defective vice of courage. habit of not facing dangers when it is the right time.
Vices of Temperance
Gluttony is the excessive vice and abstainence is the defective vice.
Raoul Wallenberg
example of courage. rescued thousands of Jews in Nazi occupied Hungary by providing passports and sheltering them.
Greed
desire to possess wealth, power or status which is more than one needs, and the desire to keep it to onself. Example is Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
Justice
rendering what is due to another and helps us be in right relations to others. Superior because of the common good for all instead of just oneself.
Prudence
ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason. Tells the middle. Way to acquire is by the reflection of own experiences.
Friendship
Helps us know ourselves. The reciprocal and mutual wishing of good to each other. Three types: 1) utility 2) pleasure and 3) virtue.
Love
wanting what is good for someone. Two different kinds: of persons and of things.
Love of People
Stronger than love of things (which is the means to the end). Two kinds: of self and of others.
Self Love
not the same of selfishness. When prefer external/bodily goods, and sacrifice moral goods, that is selfish. When prefer goods of the soul, and sacrifice external goods, that is better and more superior.
Good Business Ethics
should be regulated by moral law and justice, purpose is to serve the common good of the public. Top priority is the customer as that is the goal. Then employees, then stockholders.
Ford Company
example of good business ethics. Desire to bring the price of the car down by producing efficiency and investing in innovation. Goal was increased satisfaction of the customer. Improved labor conditions and made stockholders wealthy.
