Etymological Definition

(Intensional) "specific difference" is key. defines a term by locating its extension aka class into a broader class/genus via specific difference. ex- a triangle is a 3-sided polygon

assigns meaning to new term or new meaning to old term. example used is "10^N = 10x10x10 N times"
(use) Precisingly
Assign a clear meaning to a vague term. "Driving under the influence = having a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher"
(use) Lexically
often found in dictionary. outlines uses of a term. an organ is a. tissues in a body that do something, and b. a musical instrument
(use) Theoretically
used if definition entails certain predictions. Pv=Nrt "I know that if I plug in this value for P, I can predict that blank will happen
(use) Persuasively
used if it has the ability to alter people's attitudes. "Obama is a president who likes sitting on unicorns foreheads, or a senator is an elected official who greedily takes perks from lobbyists.
Rule 1 for Evaluating G&D Definitions
A good definition provides the essential attributes of a trait. ex- A car is a four-door vehicle
Rule 2 for evaluating G&D definition
A good definition is not circular.. aka sound is the emission of sonar waves
Rule 3 for evaluating G&D
Neither too broad nor too narrow. A President is a government employee, or a car is a 4-door vehicle
Rule 4 for evaluating G&D
A good definition is neither vague nor figurative aka music is the poetry of the soul. --Focus on figurative because it's easier to recognize
Rule 5 for evaluating G&D
A good definition should not be negative. Modest is the opposite of Coyle or light is the absence of darkness
