Hippolyte confesses to Theramène his love for

Phèdre confesses to OEnone her

News of Thesée's death


reaches Troezen, after he has been absent from the royal court for 6 months

Hippolyte reveals his love to

Aricie, as well as his desire to perhaps reign with her

Phèdre wants Hippolyte

to be King, so reveals her love for him

Rumours begin to circulate that

Thesée is still alive

Theramène announces that Phèdre's

biological son has received the crown

News that Thesée has

escaped from the underworld and returned to Troezen

Phèdre is scared that

Hippolyte has told her secret to Thesée, so she lets OEnone formulate a plan/lie to protect her honour

OEnone tells Thesée that

Hippolyte tried to rape Phèdre

When Thesée hears the false accusation

he banishes Hippolyte and curses him to the wrath of Neptune, God of the Sea

Hippolyte explains that he actually

loves Aricie, not Phèdre

Phèdre was ready to confess

until she heard news of Hippolyte's requited love for Aricie

Phèdre condemns OEnone for

her guilt, shame and sense of sin

OEnone throws herself

into the ocean and dies

Hippolyte is attacked by

a monster (half bull, half dragon)

Hippolyte's horses then

drag him to his death

Aricie arrived

just in time to mourn her lover's death

Just before his death, Hippolyte

declared his innocence and requested that Thesée treat Aricie kindly

Phèdre finally confesses that

Hippolyte was innocent, and then poisons herself

Thesée agrees to honour his

son's dying wish and adopts Aricie as his heir
