The Joint Comission (TJC)

-Addresses quality of patient care and patient safety.


-Establishes standards and accredits for: health care providers, hospitals, home health care agencies, home infusion providers, long term health care pharmacies, ambulatory infusion pharmacies, home medical equipment and home oxygen providers, ambulatory surgical centers, comunity providers, ambulatory surgical centers, community health centers, college and prison health care centers, nursing homes and subacute facilities, assisted living facilities, clinical laboratories , behavioral health organizations, alcohol and chemical dependency centers, health care networks, and preferred provider organizations.



*Accrediation is Voluntary.



TJC has been granted "deemed status" for participation in Medicare meaning that institutions have met Medicare conditions and can receive Medicare Funding.


*The institution also doesn't need to meet annual Medicare surveys by state inspectors.



National Association of the Boards of Pharmacy


(NABP)

Composed of all state boards of pharmacy.


*Has NO regulatory authority.


Discusses issues in pharmacy.


State Boards of Pharmacy (BOP)

*Regulatory State agency that oversees the practice of pharmacy in a given state.


-Sets expectations of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the state.


-Can discipline pharmacies, pharmacists, and pharmacy techs for improper behavior.

United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

Official public standards-setting authority for all prescription medication, otc medication, and other health care products manufactured and sold in the U.S.



-Sets standards for food ingredients and dietary supplements.


-Sets standards for quality, purity, strength, and consistency of products.
