Osmotic Diuretic PO, IV



Action: Maintain urine flow in patients with renal failure or during prolonged surgery because not reabsorbed so flow of filtrate steady;


Uses: Intraocular and intracranial (cerebral edma) pressure relief


Nursing Implications: Watch for edema in patients with pre-existing heart failure or pulmonary edema. Administer Mannitol IV 100 g infused over 2-6 hr. Use a filter needle to no crystals form in needle.


Side effects: Hyponatremia, edema, convulsions, tachycardia





Teaching Needs: Monitor your potassium and sodium levels to ensure no hypokalemia or hyponatremia


Drug Names: mannitol glycerin urea (ureaphil)

Fentanyl


Opioid Agonist Transdermal Patch, PO, Nasal Spray, Buccal transmucosal



Action: Bind to opioid recepetors Mu and Kappa to relieve pain.


Uses: First line drug for moderate to severe pain that are unable to be controlled by other classes of analgesics.


Nursing Implications: Obtain health history, allergies, vital signs and weight. Evaluate CBC, hepatic and renal function studies.


Effectiveness? Pain lessened stated by patient will decrease.


Side Effects: respiratory depression, sedation, physical dependence and analgesia.


Teaching Needs: Patient must understand possible addiction and respiratory depression.
