What affect does sympathetic stimulation have on the pupil of the eye?
It dilates it to allow more light in during stressful situations.
It also thickens the lens to accomodate for near vision |
What effect does sympathetic stimulation have on the GI tract?
It constricts the sphincters, decreases gastric secretion and gastric motility.
The parasympathetic nervous system relaxes the sphincters of the GI tract. What is the one exception to this?
The Gastro-esophageal sphincter which is constricted to prevent the contents of the stomach back into the esophagus. This junction is a one way valve.
What are the 4 Neuroglia cell types?
Astrocytes
Oligodendrocytes Microglia (Clean Up Crew) Ependymal (Make CSF) |
What is the function of Schwann Cells?
They make myelin for the PNS
What neurotransmitter is released by both sympathetic and parasympathetic pre-ganglionic neurons?
Acetylcholine --> Activates cholinergic receptors
What neurotransmitter is released by post-ganglionic neurons?
Norepinephrine
What is the difference between pre-ganglionic neurons of the sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system?
Sympathetic - short
Parasympathetic - long The sympathetic nervous system has cholinergic pre-ganglionic neurons and noradrenergic post-ganglionic neurons The parasympathetic has cholinergic pre and post ganglionic neurons. |
Describe the pathway of catecholamine release.
Sympathetic nervous system fires down a pre-ganglionic pathway to the adrenal medulla of the kidney and releases acetylcholine which stimulates the adrenal medulla to release catecholamines (80/20, epi/norepi) when then circulate and bind adrenergic receptors to produce sympathomimetic effects.
