Prazosin

Antihypertensive

Clondine

Antihypertensive analgesic

Metoprolol

Beta 1, heart only, antihypertensive, effects: hypotension, low co hr, mask hypoglycemia, av block, rebound excitation.

Propranolol

Neg inotropic, adrenergic receptor antagonist, beta 1 and 2, heart and lungs (no asthma), effects: same as metoprolol

Furosemide/ Lasix

High ceiling loop diuretic, effects: dehydration, low sodium and potassium, ototoxicity, hypotension

Hydrochlorothiazide

Diuretic, first choice for htn, effects: low sodium, potassium, chloride, high sugar mg, cholesterol

Spironolactone

Potassium sparing diuretic, blocks aldosterone. Effects: hyperkalemia

Nsaids (ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil)

Vasoconstriction, analgesic, all block prostaglandins. Effects: kidney toxicity, stop taking before surgery, can cause bleeding, stroke risk, gi)

Cox 2 Celebrex

Inflamed tissue only, effects: hypertension, stomach bleed

Aspirin

Blocks platelets, reye syndrome no children(brain and liver swell), salicylism/toxicity (respiratory alkalosis, gi problems, bleeding, thrombocytopenia, tinnitus

Acetaminophen/Tylenol

Anti fever, analgesic, effects: liver, toxicity (n/v, up bilirubin, coma), acetylcysteine=antidote

Morphine

Mu receptor agonist, analgesic, effects: bradypnea, hypotension, urinary retention, constipation, coma

Naloxone/narcan

Opioid antagonist

Levodopa, carbidopa

Dopamine receptor agonist, anti Parkinson’s, effects: n/v, dyskinesias (head bobbing, tremors, grimace), hypotension, tachycardia, psychosis, sweat discoloration, no protein, amantadine=antidote

Phenytoin

Anticonvulsant, slows the entrance of sodium and calcium into the neuron, low ti, effects: gums, cns, rash, endocrine, heart problems, decreases effects of warfarin, no pregnancy

Valporic acid

Anticonvulsant

Cholinergic (parasympathetic)/ neostigmine or edrophonium

Acetylcholine agonist, antialzheimers, stimulates muscles, effects: renal issues, cholinergic crisis=over medicated, muscarinic hyperstimulation (bradycardia, sweating, urination) atropine=antidot

Anticholinergic(sympathetic)/atropine

Dry up fluids, block acetylcholine, relax airway (copd), muscle relaxers, effects: tachycardia, anhidrosis, n/v, vision, photophobia, dry mouth, rash, headache

Tension test: edrophonium

Used to rule out myasthenia Gravis: gets better with administration. If not then cholinergic crisis and give atropine.
