3)Smoking
4)Dietary Habits
high in fat/Na/Refined Carbs/Cholesterol, alcohol, fried foods?
5)Glucose intolerance (Hx of?)
6)Elevated Serum Lipids (Hx of?)

Slow to/non-healing sores?
8)Obesity
recent changes?
Get Wt.
9)Psychomotor Functions
Type of lifestyle/job
exercise vs. sedentary
Psychological Stress/Coping
10)Assess tissue
A baseline should be followed by subsequent regular assessments for comparison & analysis of therapeutic effectiveness.
What measures can a pt use to improve peripheral circulation & prevent complications:
1)Teach self-care measures:
foot/hand/limbs care,visual
inspection techniques/pulse
taking.
2)Abstinence from smoking
3)Do not wear constricting clothing/items
4)Do not elevate extremities above heart, unless MD specified
5)Inspect for skin breakdown/infection,notify MD if color changes become purplish/mottling
6)Coldness increases pain/decreases sensation in extremities.Hot may cause additional vasodilation, adding to drug's effects.Test water temp
7)Do not walk around barefoot/avoid rubber soled shoes & alternate shoes
8)Do not stand/sit for long periods
9)Dry skin completely and change hose/socks daily.
What systemic effects are expected when administering pentoxifylline (Trental)?
Dyspepsia, N/V in 1% to 3%, Flatus in 1%, CNS disturbances characterized by dizziness in about 2%. Side effects to report for pentoxifylline (Trental) are:Chest pain, dysrhythmias,SOB,screen for intolerance to caffeine,Theophylline,or Theobromine (xanthine derivatives).
What systemic effects are expected when administering isoxsuprine hydrochloride (Vasodilan)?
Flushing, tingling, sweating, N/V. Side Effects to report:Hypotension, tachycardia, severe rash, nervousness, weakness.
What systemic effects are expected when administering papaverine hydrochloride (Pavagen TD)?
Flushing, sweating, nausea, abd distress, tachycardia, vertigo, drowsiness, headache. Report deviations from baseline to MD.
What systemic effects are expected when administering phenoxybenzamine hydrochloride (Dibenzyline)?
Nasal stuffiness, miosis, hypotension, tachycardia. Report increasing episodes of hypotension to MD for dosage adjustment.
What systemic effects are expected when administering cilostazol (Pletal)?
Dyspepsia & diarrhea in 2% to 5%, CNS disturbances characterized by dizziness occur in 2%, severe headaches occurred in 3% which made them discontinue use. To report:chest pain, palpitations, dysrhythmias,SOB.
What are the major treatable causes of peripheral vascular disease?
hypertension, cigarette smoking, & atherosclerosis.
The usual treatment of Raynaud's disease involves?
Calcium ion antagonists.
Pentoxifylline (Trental) acts to increase the?
Flexibility of the erythrocytes.
Arteriosclerosis obliterans:
AKA, athero-, Is the most common form of obstructive arterial disease, results from atherosclerotic plaque formation w/ narrowing of the lower aorta & major arteries that provide circulation to the legs.
Intermittent claudication:
Obstruction of blood flow through the arteries resulting in ischemia to the tissues supplied by those arteries. The sx of which is pain secondary to lack of O2 to muscles during exercise.
Paresthesias:
Numbness w/ tingling. As the disease progresses arteries become obstructed, thrombosis or gangrene can occur. Additional sx include: pain at rest, numbness, & paresthesias.
Raynaud's Disease:
Peripheral vascular disease caused by arterial vasospasm.
Vasospasm:
Vasoconstriction of blood vessels & subsequent ischemia of the arteries of the skin of the hands, fingers, & sometimes toes.
What are the side effects that may occur during the initiating therapy of isoxsuprine hydrochloride therapy?
Tingling, sweating, flushing, N/V.
self-limiting; unnecessary to report.
What major side effects should be reported & evaluated during cilostazol therapy?
Palpitations, angina, arrhythmias, & SOB.
Patients should not consume what while taking cilostazol?
Grapefruit Juice
Beverage
Pentoxifylline is used in treating?
Intermittent claudication
